Hemp Oil: Intelligent Skincare

Sourced from the tiny seeds of the cannabis sativa plant, hemp seed oil, generally referred to as hemp oil has been feted for quite a while now. It is endearing and enduring. This humble ingredient has luxurious and lasting benefits to the skin. Before we elucidate its wonders, let’s start on some tips to make a good skincare choice.

When choosing any skin care product it’s worth considering some points:

  • Know your skin type (check Ayurveda & Skin Type)
  • Don’t fall for hype: It is easy to be enticed by packaging, popularity, branding; be conscious and mindful of what you want on your skin.
  • Don’t fall for the ‘Natural’ or ‘Organic’ tag: Sometimes it is a marketing gimmick; an empty promise. Sometimes there may be just one or two natural ingredients listed and those could be in such minuscule amounts as to have no benefits for your skin.
  • Check the ingredients: Many products use the INCI ( International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) which are unintelligible to people who are unfamiliar with chemical names. Many products will have the recognisable and common names of the ingredients. Check to see if all ingredients are natural and if you would be happy to use them on your skin.
  • Check the order of ingredients: Ingredients are listed in order of highest to lowest concentration in the product formulation. If the ingredient you are looking for is at the bottom of the list it is of no real help to you. As a thumb rule, if there are 10 ingredients then the first 5 will make up for 80% of the formulation. If only 5 ingredients then the first 3 will be the primary ones.

In products using hemp seed oil, the manufacturer may use a very small amount. Take care to check that it is not the last ingredient in the list; it need not be the first ingredient, but it should not be the last one either.

  • Do a patch test: always a good practice.

Hemp seed oil is a gift to skincare-wellness. In the modern skincare and wellness industry, It has been around since 1980s. Its versatility has stood scrutiny and has grown in stature steadily. It’s here to stay and for all the right reasons.

So, how does this wonder seed oil work?

In 6 proven super beneficial ways on skin and scalp:

  1. Anti-inflammatory

Incredible as it may seem, it suits all skin types.

As a natural deep cleanser, hemp seed oil does away with dirt and grime. The gamma linoleic acid (GLA) & omega-9 in hemp seed oil helps treat acne and regulate sebum production in oily skins. The underlying problem with dry skin is that it produces more oil to compensate for lack of moisture and that’s where hemp seed oil steps in by penetrating deep into the skin to dissolve the excessive sebum production. So, it ticks all the boxes for all skin types.

  1. Nourishing

It weaves magic on the roughest & driest of hands/skin, and weak/ brittle hair.

Hemp seed oil has an abundance of fatty acids making it ideal for nourishing the skin while protecting it from inflammation, oxidation and ageing. Hemp seed is perhaps the single source of essential oils; vitamins A, E, B-12; healthy fatty acids; vital minerals like iron, potassium, and magnesium...and that is a conservative list of its virtues.

  1. Moisturising

Dew fresh skin and shiny strong hair – yes, it’s possible with hemp seed oil.

It is a powerful natural humectant, and as such, hemp seed oil transports moisture deep within the skin while fortifying the cystosol (liquid matrix) in the skin cellular structure to help keep skin & scalp supple and robust.

deep moisturising benefits

  1. Anti-ageing

Rejuvenates the skin and promotes a youthful glow. Yes it does!

Sadly, the body does not produce linoleic and oleic acid and these play an important role in anti-ageing and skin health. Hemp seed oil is loaded with the right ratio of unsaturated fatty acids which plumps up the skin, smoothens and reduces fine lines and wrinkles over sustained use. The antioxidant property of vitamin E protects the skin from free radical damage and pollutants and is reparative.

  1. Antibacterial and antifungal

Naturally so.

Hemp seed oil is rich in vitamin E and Beta-Carotene, two antioxidants that not only maintain skin health, but helps skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis.  A study in Finland came with definite results.

  1. Suitable for sensitive skins

Rejoice 😊

Hemp seed oil has a CR (Comedogenic Rating) of 0, yes ZERO. It means hemp seed oil will not block your pores causing more acne and is therefore safe to use.
